Lord Krishna & Arjun in Shrimad Bhagavad Gita

After thinking a lot about it, I am starting this series of Tutorials for spreading the real essence and different sacred texts of SanatanaVedic Dharma. As we all know it’s very vast, both in terms of knowledge and volume. We will start with Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta. As it’s most known and the gist of all other sacred texts and literature in SanatanaVedic Dharma.

It can be termed as a garland of other sacred texts/literature in SanatanaVedic Dharma. It’s also ‘First to Know’/’First to Have’ knowledge for any novice in SanatanaVedic Dharma.

In this First Part of our series, we will just start with the basics. I will try my best to make this series simple enough so that even a Novice won’t feel lagging. So let’s start with the Agenda so we can have a fair idea about what is going to be discussed here.

Topics Covered :

1)      A small introduction of SanatanaVedic Dharma.
2)      A small introduction of SanatanaVedic Dharma’s sacred scriptures.
3)      What is Srimad Bhagwat Geeta?
4)      When was Srimad Bhagwat Geeta revealed?
5)      WHY Srimad Bhagwat Geeta?
6)      WHAT does Srimad Bhagwat Geeta Offer us?
7)      Contents of Srimad Bhagwat Geeta.
8)      HOW will we do it?

Let’s start our journey and get into the details.

1) A small introduction of SanatanaVedic Dharma :

Sanatana Dharma is the original name of Hindu dharma/Hinduism. The name Hindu is mere a recent development. The real name is Sanatana Dharma. It is the most ancient culture and the social, spiritual, and religious tradition that we still have in mother earth. It also has a deeper meaning and it’s the most scientific (even if we accept that Science has known it all, with our eyes closed!) way to live our life.

The Sanskrit word ’Sanatana’ means Anadi (beginningless)/Anantha (endless) / Eternal / Everlasting. Hence Sanatana Dharma was here with us, is here with us and will be here with us forever.

Dharma is from ‘dhri’, which means to hold together, to sustain. On a simpler note, What can be rightfully held in our life/for our life is Dharma. It’s not created by any human, unlike all other Cults that exist today and are also called as religion! Dharma is called Religion in the English dictionary but the West doesn’t have any idea about the word Dharma. Basically, Dharma and religion are not same at all. And if we say Dharma is the same as religion, then we also have to admit that all other so-called religions (apart from Sanatana Dharma) exist today are nothing but Cults! As spiritually Dharma can’t be many, it must be one for all human kinds and it should be from GOD, not created by mere humans!

The term VEDIC is used with Sanatana Dharma, as it abides by the Vedic rules. Sanatana Dharma is practiced on the rules set by the Vedas. The Veda is the first literature of mankind.

Hence it’s called Sanatana Vedic Dharma. As we have already known that the word Hindu Dharma /Hinduism is mere a recent development hence we Must call it Sanatana Vedic Dharma NOT Hinduism.

2)    A small introduction of SanatanaVedic Dharma’s sacred scriptures :

There are many sacred texts in Sanatana Dharma, but here we will only talk about main items. There are 3 main texts i.e. i) The Veda ii) The MahaPuranas iii) The MahaKavyas.

      i)      First is the Veda. It’s the first-ever literature of Mankind. Veda is divided into four parts named as i) Rig ii) Sama iii) Yajur iv) Atharva.

Each Veda has been subclassified into four major text types –

1)      The Samhitas

2)      The Aranyakas

3)      The Brahmanas

4)      The Upanishads (texts discussing meditation, philosophy and spiritual knowledge). Also Known as Vedanta. The Gyan Kanda of the Vedas.

ii)      Second is the Maha Puranas. They are written by Sage Vyasa in Dwapar yuga where the Avatar of Lord Vishnu was Lord Krishna. There are 18 MahaPuranas. They are subcategorized into 3 classes, i.e. Swattik, Rajasik, and Tamasik Purana. All these three categories are nothing but 3 Gunas. Let me give examples of Puranas with their Gunas.

Swattik :- Vishnu Purana, Bhagavata Purana, Naradeya Purana, Garuda Purana,Padma Purana, Varaha Purana

Rajasik :- Brahmanda Purana, Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Markandeya Purana, Bhavishya Purana, Vamana Purana, Brahma Purana

Tamasik :- Matsya Purana, Kurma purana, Skanda Purana, Agni Purana,Shiva Purana, Linga Purana

iii)      Third is the Maha Kavyas. They are 2 in numbers. The name of 2 MahaKavyas are

            1)The Ramayana

            2)The Mahabharata.

The Ramayana was written by sage Valmiki in Treta yuga, where the avatar of Lord Vishnu was Lord Ramchandra. The Mahabharata was written by sage Vyas in Dwapar Yuga where the Avatar of Lord Vishnu was Lord Krishna.

Apart from these there are different other sacred texts like Brambha Sutras, Yoga Sutras, Bhakti Sutras, Samhitas, Nyay, Tarka, different Shastras, etc.

3) What is Srimad Bhagwat Geeta?

I hope we have got a rough idea about the main sacred texts of Sanatana Vedic Dharma. Now we will come to our topic, i.e. Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta. Now the question in front of us is ‘What is Shreemad Bhagwat Geeta ?’ Let us know about it.

'GEETA' – Means a Song, which is to be sung. So Srimad Bhagwat Geeta means The Song of God.

It is a part of the Mahabharata. The Mahabharata is stretched across 18 parvas (Sections). Eg. Adi , Sabha …. Mahaprasthanika, Svargarohana parvas. Srimad Bhagwat Geeta is a Part of Bhishma Parva. [ chapters 25–42 ]

The Geeta is a set of dialogues between Pandava prince Arjuna and his guide, charioteer Lord Krishna, right before the start of the climactic Kurukshetra War in the epic The Mahabharata.

The Srimad Bhagwat Geeta presents a synthesis of Sanatan ideas about Dharma, theistic Bhakti and the YOGic ideas of Moksha. It covers Gyan, Bhakti, Karma Yog, incorporating ideas from the Sankhya-Yog philosophy.

Among all vast sacred Sanatani texts, the Srimad Bhagwat Geeta is the best known and most famous. Because it gives the extract/gist of all other sacred Sanatani texts. And it’s narrated by Bhagawan Shri Krishna.

It states the dharmic householder can achieve the same goals as the renouncing monk through "inner renunciation", that is "motiveless action".Desires, selfishness and the craving for fruits can distort one from the dharmic action and spiritual living. The Gita synthesizes several paths to spiritual realization based on the premise that people are born with different temperaments and tendencies (guna).

The Bhagavad Gita manuscript is found in the sixth book of the Mahabharata manuscripts – the Bhisma Parva. Therein, in the third section, the Gita forms chapters 25–42, which is 6.3.25 to 6.3.42.

It has 700 Slokas/Verses inside it. All the slokas are structured into  2 poetic meters, i.e.
     i)  Anushtubh Chanda (Each shloka line has two-quarter verses with exactly eight syllables)
ii) Tristubh Chanda (Each shloka line has two-quarter verses with exactly Eleven syllables)

Lord Krishna Abstract

4) When was Srimad Bhagwat Geeta revealed?

Towards the end of The Mahabharata there's a Dharma Yudhha (righteous war) between Pandavas and Kauravas.

Arjuna (Third Pandav) is filled with moral dilemma and despair about the violence and death the war will cause.

He seeks Krishna's counsel and Krishna counsels Arjuna to "fulfill his Kshatriya (warrior) duty to uphold the Dharma" through "selfless action".

The Krishna–Arjuna dialogue covers a broad range of spiritual topics, touching upon ethical dilemmas and philosophical issues that go far beyond the war Arjuna faces.

 5) Why Srimad Bhagwat Geeta?

Actually, there’s always a WAR going on inside us. It’s WAR between the Right and Wrong, i.e Devic Gunas and Asurik gunas.

It’s the Devic gunas which helps us in the way of GOD and the Asurik gunas distracts us from it.

For example, close your eyes and try to meditate and start thinking about Supreme Lord Krishna for mere 5 Minutes! You will come to know about the WAR, happening inside you.

The WAR is always going on in our mind and as a guide like Bhagwan Shri Krishna, his advice, Srimad Bhagwat Geeta will lead us to him.

6) What does Srimad Bhagwat Geeta Offer us?

Shreemad Bhagwat Geeta gives us Sanatana/Eternal answers about
i)                   Who are we.
ii)                 Our purpose in this Mother Earth.
iii)              Our duty.
iv)               What is Soul(Atman).
v)                 What is Dharma.
vi)               How to be in Dharma’s side.
vii)            How to achieve him.
viii)          Clearing self doubts in our life.
ix)               YOG ( not the so called false 'YOGA' that we do. we do Yogasan instead of Yog).
………… I can’t End it here!
